enVisage is a selection of works from the Museum’s Collection based on the theme of the portrait. The human face has been a focus of creative interest since the beginning of time. Some artists have been fascinanted with the face as a mask, disguising and concealing the person to whom it belongs, others see the face as a mirror in which the full force of a personality is revealed. This exhibition explores these and other aspects of portraiture by artists such as John Bellany, who used the puffin as a self-image, and Sava Seculic whose triple headed ‘Gourd’ is one of the more unusual items on display. The exhibition combines portraits in print by Tim Mara, Mimmo Paladino and Wilfredo Lam with sculpture by John Ahern and Stephan Balkenhol and a drawing by Nick Miller, and for the first time since its acquisition, works from Brian Mcguire’s important ‘Casa da Cultura’ project.
