This exhibition of over 70 works from the Madden-Arnholz Collection of prints constituted something of a history of print making, more especially the use of the medium as a propaganda tool, and featured works by such prominent artists as Dürer, Brueghel, Bosch, Callot, Rembrandt, Hogarth, Blake, Goya and Daumier.

The print as a document of the social life of soldiers, manual workers and peasants was illustrated in the work of Brueghel, Bosch and the French printmaker Jacques Callot. Hogarth’s use of the print was more consciously political and his subjects more often urban than rural, but the sharpness and effectiveness of his social commentary was not lost on Goya and Daumier. The exhibition was shown alongside the large-scale exhibition of contemporary illustration work by Brian Cronin, whose works have also been published in many leading magazines and newspapers.
