About the Collection

The IMMA Collection is a unique resource which is made available to the public through a vibrant programme of temporary exhibitions and projects. Collection Exhibitions may explore the work of an individual artist, or address a theme or historic period.

Representations of the Famine comprised a series of 19th-century works from public and private collections in Britain and Ireland dealing with Anglo-Irish relations, emigration, eviction and racial stereotyping. These were shown with contemporary works such as Alanna O’Kelly’s tape/slide installation Sanctuary/Wasteland from the Museum’s own Collection.

Other contemporary works included pieces by Geraldine O’Reilly and the Knocknaheeny Women’s Group. The exhibition was developed as part of the Museum’s expanding National Programme, and was also seen in Belfast, Cobh, Castlebar and Derry.
