Tea Mäkipää (Finland)

Studio 14
January - Feburary 2007 and later in 2007/2008
Installation/film/sculpture
Within the framework of her installations, films and photographs, Tea Mäkipää has critically examined the sustainability of the Western way of life: consumerism, environmental issues, the gulf between rich and poor, the downsides of globalisation.  She has investigated survival strategies and the social behaviour of both individuals as well as the human race in coexistence with other species.  Mäkipää’s work deals with contemporary issues: the biggest enemy of human kind is itself – unable to establish an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. Mäkipää deals with this theme from the viewpoint of the human race as a species; it has conquered many of life’s struggles and now needs to find solutions to behave.  We have multiplied and filled the planet up to the point that there is no space for other species if the human population cannot find them useful, profitable or beneficial.  Mäkipää utilises the means of art to investigate the problem laden antipodes of nature and technology, hermetic withdrawal and urbanisation, hope and fear, as well as the questionable logic of consumerism and progress in our spiralling development towards ever more luxurious living condition.
