Alexandra do Carmo’s practice is focused on the studio as a conceptual field of study.  The use of drawing is frequent in her work, though she also employs installation, video, photography and performance in an investigation of the dynamics of authorship.  Her work investigates the artist’s context in society - the discourse between the artist and the public as a means of generating discussions about the artistic practice towards a more lateral and less hierarchical contemporary artistic practice, with the artists work actively integrated into social life.  Do Carmo studied at the AR.CO Lisbon, and has been based in New York since 2000 where she moved to complete her Masters studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.  Recently do Carmo took part in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Programme and the Location One residency programme in New York.
